More on Takahashi

From MLB Trade Rumors:

9:01pm: The Pirates have emerged as a destination for Takahashi, according to a report fromSanspo passed along by Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker.  The report also notes that the Dodgers are targeting other pitchers and the Mets were "moving towards an MLB contract," but couldn't agree on money.

Meanwhile, Takahashi was set to throw for teams today in Arizona, according to an article from Sponich passed along by Newman.

BTW Notes:

Monday I will be doing the much unanticipated site updates, some have already found there way online like the twitter feed to the right.  I have 3 blogs I will be adding to the blogroll as well as a few cosmetic changes and a link to possibly the best Pittsburgh Sports Forum on the internet….

Who ‘Dat?  Congrats to the Saints and Drew Brees.

Pirates Among Teams For Takahashi

LHP Hisanori Takahashi will be making his decision soon as to which team he will sign with.  The Pirates, Mets, Dodgers, Red Sox, Giants and Padres are in the running for his services.  A scouting report can be found here.

BTW Take:

Takahashi is looking for an opportunity to start, although he is reported to be a better fit for relief duties.  I don’t think he would fit into the Pirates rotation, the Pirates are likely looking at him as a long/middle reliever.  He is not a hard thrower, so coming out of the pen may make sense as an addition left handed option as well as a change of pace among the flame throwers Huntington has assembled in the bullpen.

More Free Agent Signings?

Before I get to the meat of the post, here is a quick link for an interview on Mets Paradise of the best blogger I know personally.  He really is a great guy.

Free Agents Signings

Frank Coonelly did his monthly chat on the Pirates.com website.  The full transcript can be found here.  One question and answer caught my attention more than the others:

bucsin09: Hi, Frank! Is it safe to assume we are done with free-agent signings and trades before Spring Training?

Coonelly: With the [Octavio] Dotel, [Brendan] Donnelly, [Ryan] Church, [D.J.] Carrasco and [Javier] Lopez signings and several Minor League free-agent signings, it is likely that we will head into Spring Training with the current group. We are, however, keeping tabs on certain free agents who might be a fit if their financial demands soften.

Coonelly and crew are “keeping tabs on certain free agents who might be a fit if their financial demands soften.”

Who would “fit” if they soften enough?

Let me compile a list from the MLBTradeRumors.com free agent list.

First, let us eliminate some positions.

Outfield

The Pirates are well stocked in the outfield with the following outfielders on the 40 man roster:

  19 Ryan Church L/L 6-2 220 10/14/78
  43 Gorkys Hernandez R/R 6-0 175 09/07/87
  16 Brandon Jones L/R 6-1 210 12/10/83
  46 Garrett Jones L/L 6-4 230 06/21/81
  22 Andrew McCutchen R/R 5-10 175 10/10/86
  85 Lastings Milledge R/R 5-11 200 04/05/85
  44 Brandon Moss L/R 6-0 210 09/16/83
  58 John Raynor R/R 6-1 205 01/04/84
  31 Jose Tabata R/R 5-11 210 08/12/88
  24 Delwyn Young S/R 5-10 190 06/30/82

Shortstop

Shortstop is very thin with remaining free agents, so they also can be ruled out.  Here is the list:

Shortstops
Chris Gomez (39)

Third Base

Third base is a no brainer on the depth chart with LaRoche, Walker and Alvarez on the 40 man.  They won’t be looking into 3B options.

Second Base

Second base also is fairly well manned right now, I doubt any interest will be made of the following FA’s:

Second basemen
Adam Kennedy (34)
Felipe Lopez (30) - Type B, not offered arb
Pablo Ozuna (35)

I do think it may be worth keeping an eye on all three, depth never hurts considering Iwamura did have injury problems last season.

Catcher

Doumit and Jaramillo will man behind the plate.  I would not be surprised to see Tony Sanchez make an appearance if either gets injured.  Although it is more likely we would see a call up from AAA or Neil Walker stepping behind the plate as a super utility guy.  Here are the free agents available, just for reference sake.  I removed Torreabla since he is rumored to be nearing a deal.

Catchers
Paul Bako (38)
Rod Barajas (34) - Type B, offered arb
Michael Barrett (33)
Jose Molina (35)
Javier Valentin (34)

Now, that ends the elimination round.  Lets look at who the Pirates may be considering.

First Base

Ideally Jeff Clement or Steve Pearce show they can handle MLB pitching and field the position.  If neither steps up to the plate during spring training, Garrett Jones is the fall back option.  This makes me wonder if the Pirates may be looking at an outside option.  I bolded the players below who may be a “fit” when their salary request “softens”.

First basemen
Rich Aurilia (38)
Hank Blalock (29)
Russell Branyan (34)
Tony Clark (38)
Carlos Delgado (38) - Type B, not offered arb
Nomar Garciaparra (36)
Mike Jacobs (29)
Daryle Ward (35)
Dmitri Young (36)

The three of Blalock, Branyan and Jacobs could all add some decent pop to the middle of the lineup.  Protection for Garrett Jones and Ryan Doumit can only help whatmay be an anemic lineup.

Branyan hit 31 home runs in 116 games for Seattle last season.

Blalock hit  25 home runs in 123 games for Texas.

Jacobs hit 19 home runs in 128 games for the Royals.

Starting Pitcher

The list is long, so I am only bolding the ones I think may “fit”.

Starting pitchers
Brandon Backe (32)
Cha Seung Baek (30)
Erik Bedard (31) - Type B, not offered arb
Kris Benson (34)
Paul Byrd (39)
Bartolo Colon (37)
Adam Eaton (32)
Shawn Estes (37)
Tom Glavine (44)
Mike Hampton (37)
Livan Hernandez (35)
Jason Jennings (31)
Jason Johnson (36)
Braden Looper (35) - Type B, not offered arb
Noah Lowry (29)
Pedro Martinez (38)
Eric Milton (34)
Dustin Moseley (28)
Mark Mulder (32)
Odalis Perez (33)
Sidney Ponson (33)
Mark Prior (28)
Jason Schmidt (37)
John Smoltz (43)
Brett Tomko (37)
Chien-Ming Wang (30)
Jarrod Washburn (35)
Todd Wellemeyer (31)
Kip Wells (33)

Lowry, Wang and Prior are coming back from injuries.  There should be some scheduled workouts for both in the coming months.  Neither Wand nor Prior are likely to be ready for the start of the regular season, though Wang just started doing long toss and Prior is working off of a mound.  Lowry recently postponed a workout session to get some extra time on the mound.

I did skip a few other names, mostly due to rumors of them signing in the next couple weeks.

Left Handed Reliever

Considering there is only 1 lefty in the pen, this could be the actual target for a free agent.  Like before, look for the bolded names.

Left-handed relievers
John Bale (36)
Joe Beimel (32) - Type B, not offered arb
Alan Embree (40)
Ron Mahay (39)
Will Ohman (31) - Type B, not offered arb
Glendon Rusch (35)
Scott Schoeneweis (36)
Ron Villone (40)
Jamie Walker (38)

Considering the lack of lefties, any one of them could be a target.  I selected the ones that have been scouted by the Pirates in recent years and or weeks.

Leave some comments below as to anything I may have overlooked.  I’d like to get a good discussion started on this one.

Dotel And Other News

Dotel

The Pirates and Octavio Dotel made it official by signing a 1 year contract with an option year.  Total guaranteed money is $3.5 M plus performance bonuses.  The option year is worth $4.5M.  Neal Huntington has been quoted as calling him the closer.

BTW Take:

The bullpen makeover is now complete.  Matt Bandi at Pittsburgh Lumber Co.  puts some numbers to the reconstruction.  According to his numbers, the Pirates pen looks to be middle of the league.  Still, that is an nice improvement over what the bullpen did last season.

Claggett

To make room for Dotel, the Pirates DFA’ed Anthony Claggett.

BTW Take:

Claggett was on the fence with each move the Pirates made this offseason, he finally fell over the fence.

Freddy Sanchez

A source tells me Freddy had shoulder surgery and may miss the beginning of the season for the Giants.

BTW Take:

The Sanchez trade last season is looking more and more like a shrewd deal.  If Freddy can stay healthy, he will be a nice asset for the Giants, unfortunately health has been a problem since the trade.  Good luck to Freddy in his recovery.

Minor Deal

I have been contacted multiple times today that the Pirates are in the process of a minor trade.  For those expecting Brandon Jones to be moved, the only common thread in the rumors was Jones was not part of the deal.

Dotel and Sheets

Dotel

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Octavio Dotel have come to terms on a one year deal with a club option.  Specific terms around bonus and base pay have not yet been revealed.  Dotel is scheduled for a physical on Thursday prior to putting pen to paper.  The formal announcement should come shortly after the physical.

A roster move needs to be made to open a spot on the 40 man roster.

BTW Take:

Finally!  In addition to signing with the Pirates, it seems Dotel is also setting up shop in Pittsburgh in another way.  His wife is due to give birth at “any time” and may stay in Pittsburgh to deliver the child.

Sheets

The Pirates were one of the teams at the throwing session Tuesday by Ben Sheets.

Sheets contract desires have come to light as reported via MLB Trade Rumors:

MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone hears Ben Sheets will seek "at least $10 million, plus lots of incentives, and a second-year, player-controlled option."

Dejan Kovacevic states in the PBC Blog:

The Pirates are not a bidder for Ben Sheets.

They scouted the session as a matter of course in developing information on as many players as possible. Happens all the time.

Common speculation from sources outside the Pirates, the Pirates are looking at Sheets as an option IF MLB and the Players Union target the team in a similar fashion to the way the Marlins were recently reprimanded for not spending revenue sharing money.  Adding a $10 M contract to an estimated $40 M payroll would get the teams payroll figures back to the neighborhood of the payroll from 2009, actually exceeding it by a few million.

BTW Take:

It would be a shame if the Pirates made a move of this caliber just to appease MLB and the Union.  While adding Sheets would be a good move for the Pirates, to be forced into such a move would undermine anything the front office has done this off-season.

Sheets is a pitcher who could turn a 71 win team into a .500 ball club, something most Pirates fans have been praying for for nearly 2 decades.  Bringing in a pitcher, or any player,  of Sheets caliber should be the last move in rebuilding to put the team over the top, not over .500.

One bonus to adding someone like Sheets would be trade value later in the season if he stayed healthy.  This is one area I don’t understand in most rebuilding projects in MLB.  Teams want to add young talent but won’t sign upper level free agents to bolster the MLB level and allow a trade that would bring in more talent later in the year around the deadline.

To help sell the concept to ownership, signing Sheets in addition to the recent buzz the Pirates have generated would put more butts in the seats early in the season and just add to the butt count when Alvarez and Tabata are brought up.  Simply put, Alvarez + Sheets + a run at a winning record = $$$.

Don’t be surprised IF you hear the Pirates linked to Sheets in the coming weeks, especially if reports are correct the Pirates are next on the MLB/MLBPA hit list are true.

An Interesting Link from KC

Kings of Kauffman beg for a deal between KC and Pittsburgh for Brandon Jones.

Busy Day For The Pirates

Keeping Up With The Jones’

The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed Brandon Jones off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.  Brandon Jones was DFA’ed when the Braves signed Eric Hinske.  A scouting report on Brandon Jones can be found here, and stats can be found here.

BTW Take:

Jones was dropped repeatedly by the Braves in the depth chart regardless of his readiness due to experienced players being brought into the organization.  He is an athletic and highly touted player much in the mold of many of the outfielders Huntington has acquired in his tenure.  His defense is above average and he is said to have an above average arm in the outfield.  His bat is said to be MLB ready.

While there was speculation a trade was imminent another roster move was made…

Steven Jackson DFA’ed

In a less than expected move, but not quite shocking, Steven Jackson was DFA’ed to make room for Jones on the 40 man roster.

BTW Take:

With the number of relievers, quality relievers at that, still available via free agency, moving Jackson off the 40 man roster should not be a surprise.  While Jackson will likely garner some attention, he has a good chance of clearing waivers when similar pitchers are still available and willing to agree to a minor league contract that does not tie up a 40 man roster slot.

When pitchers like Brian Bass and D.J. Carrasco sign minor league deals, the odds another team would take Jackson on a waiver claim seems much slimmer to me.

It is a gamble, but I would call it a calculated risk that Huntington is taking.

No Arbitration Hearing For Duke

The Pirates and Zach Duke avoided arbitration by agreeing to a 1 year contract valued at $4.3 M.

BTW Take:

No surprise on a 1 year deal as is customary when dealing with arbitration.  Duke was in his 2nd year of arbitration with one more remaining after this coming season.

What Does This All Mean?  And Thanks For All The Fish.

I believe Jeff Clement will not be on the Opening Day roster with Pittsburgh.  It seems the recent moves point towards the Pirates wanting Clement to get a little more time playing first base in AAA before he takes the field for the Pirates at the MLB level.

With the number of outfielders on the roster, Garrett Jones can resume play at his natural position of first base.  The athleticism in the outfield with the additions of Ryan Church, Brandon Jones and rule 5 pick John Raynor.  Add those names with Young and Moss, and there isn’t much room on the 25 man roster for Clement, Garrett Jones and Steve Pearce.

It has been an interesting offseason so far, but I feel there is yet more to come after the Dotel signing is finalized.

Would the Pirates be daring enough, bold enough, even crazy enough to make a free agent signing that could spur them into the discussion for one of the most improved teams of the offseason?  Would the Pirates be willing to sign an ace?  Yes I am talking about Ben Sheets.

Why would he sign with the Pirates and why would they try to sign him?

For Sheets:

First, the Pirates can guarantee Sheets has the chance to be on a contending team by years end.  If/when the Pirates are out of it come the trade deadline, they can move him to a contender.

Second, Sheets would have the opportunity to prove he is still ace quality and earn a large payday after the season while pitching in a less stressful environment for most of the season.  Think of it as a minor league rehab assignment while collecting a MLB paycheck and pitching against MLB hitters.

Third, if he led a staff that ended the longest losing season streak in pro sports history, he would automatically be enshrined in the Pirates Hall of Fame and become a legend in the city of Pittsburgh.

Forth, the opportunity to work with the legendary Dave Kerwin and stick it to the Brewers.

For the Pirates:

First, Sheets would provide a true ace on the staff and set up a very nice rotation of Sheets, Maholm, Ohlendorf and Duke.

Second, it would add a player who could be traded at the deadline for a bounty of prospects or be kept and land a first round pick as a type A free agent.

Third, a signing of Sheets would raise the Pirates payroll and keep the dogs of the union and the commissioners office off the trail of not spending revenue sharing.  The Pirates do have a sizeable amount of cash still available under their self imposed salary cap they could use to lure Sheets to Pittsburgh.

Forth, it would give the fans a sense the Pirates want to win.

Will it happen, no.  Should it happen?  I believe yes.  It is a gamble considering his history of injury problems, but Huntington seems to be a gambling man based on his history of acquisitions.

Carrasco Soon To Be A Pirate

‘Tis the season for Pittsburgh Pirates fans.  January and February are the times of the year the Pirates sign their free agents, also known as bargain time.  D.J. Carrasco and the Pirates have agreed to terms on a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.  The signing has not been made official, yet.

Two more relievers are targeted and expected in the next few days.  Octavio Dotel is one of the targets and rumored to be closest to being the next announcement.

BTW Take:

Carrasco will make $950K + $250K in bonuses based on appearances if he makes the team.  Carrasco is a poor mans right handed version of John Grabow.  Suddenly the bullpen is starting to take shape.  If Dotel is signed, the bullpen has the look and feel of a surprise strength for the team.  The real question will be how the team will score runs.

January 12, 2010

Pirates Have A Prayer, Well At Least They Have A Church.

The Pirates have agreed to terms with OF Ryan Church pending a physical later this week.  Terms have not yet been disclosed.

BTW Take:

Church is a better fit for this team than some other options.  He is a nice fit as what should amount to a 4th outfielder.  He is a good bat from the bench and holds a .316 average at PNC.  His defense is good enough to be considered as a defensive replacement late in games.

A player like Church will not block Tabata from a call up, if he is ready, and allows an adequate replacement for Jones in right if Clement struggles at first.

Depending on the terms, some speculation has come out it may be a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, this could make minor changes to the 40 man roster.  In all likelihood Bixler could be the man dropped from the 40 man roster.

Dirty Doug Now Dodger Doug

Doug Mientkiewicz has agreed to a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Hopefully Doug will like La La Land, we'll miss him in Pittsburgh.

Rumors:

Rumor has it Will Ohman will be making a decision early next week on which team he will sign with.  No word on if he is still considering the Pirates offer.

Ohman, Jaramillo, Steroids

Ohman:

Jerry Crasnick is reporting on ESPN.com that the Pirates are one of three teams who have offered major league contracts to Will Ohman, the other two are the Padres and Marlins.  Ohman plans to continue discussions with three contending teams being the Mets, Dodgers and Phillies.

BTW Take:

While it is nice to know the Pirates have an offer on the table, all three contending teams could still use help in the pen.  One of them will step up and offer a deal to Ohman.  The only chance the Pirates actually have is if the money is so far off that Ohman looks at a deal with the Pirates as nothing more than a preamble to a trade to a contender in June.

Jaramillo:

A player happy to come to the Pittsburgh Pirates?  Yes there is such a player.  His name is Jason Jaramillo.

BTW Take:

While on the surface one would wonder if Jaramillo is destined to pop a drug test, he actually has a lot of reasons to be happy.  He and John Russell have a good history.  He was trapped behind two solid catchers in Philly, much the same as where Ronny Paulino sits now, but now has a chance to make the majors.  He also knows quite a few Pirate players and coach Long.  He feels like he is coming home in a sense.

Jaramillo is a good defensive catcher, a nice alternative to the average at best defensive catcher in Doumit.  Don’t think Jaramillo will take away Doumit’s position, Doumit is a catcher because of his bat which is much better that Jaramillo.

Steroids:

Just like anyone else, I am sick of hearing this story and how everyone wants to hear the other 103 players named.  What does it matter?  It has already been leaked that players were warned of the tests prior to 2003.  It is not hard to “study” for such tests.

If anyone is gullible enough to believe the 104 players who tested positive are the only players to have used?  I have some ocean front property here in Iowa I’d like to sell you.

People are calling for “clean” players to come forward and be “role models” by standing up for clean and fair play.  The name I hear most often is Jeter.  Has anyone considered why Jeter may not step up and do this?  Might he be viewed as a hypocrite the same way A-Rod is being viewed?  Might he be afraid his name will be mentioned in the future on a different report?

The 104 failures are not the only doping cheaters in the history of the game.  Please people, stop acting like this list is the be all end all list of cheaters.  It is merely a start of what is sure to be a long laundry line of dirty laundry to be aired in the coming years.

There is a reason the 1990-2003 seasons are looked at as the “Steroid Era”.

This is why I don’t write about steroids.  The more time that passes.  The more players get named.  The important thing is MLB does everything possible to keep the game clean.  Lord knows there are no players in the Hall that have cheated.  Right?  (Sarcasm alert in case you missed it)

Pirates In Talks With Edgar Gonzalez

A special thank you to Josh at Cardinals Best News Links for the news.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in talks with Edgar Gonzalez, translated ESPN Desportes link can be found here.  The soon to be 26 year old right handed pitcher most recently pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008.  He was primarily a starter in the minors and has had some experience starting, as well as relieving, at the Major League level.  The deal is reported to be for a minor league contract with a spring training invite.

The article also has some minor information on Sergio Valenzuela, who the Pirates have already invited to minor league camp and could be announced soon, and some quotes from Pirates Scout Jesus Valdez.

BTW Take:

Gonzalez had some very nice minor league numbers that have not yet translated to major league numbers.  He is likely a depth pitcher who is entering his peak years.  This is a pitcher that fans may want to keep an eye on in Indianapolis who has a real chance of getting innings in Pittsburgh before years end.

Rumors:

From MLB Trade Rumors:

Braden Looper (34) - Despite interest from the Orioles, Looper prefers the NL.  If the Dodgers sign Randy Wolf, maybe he'll turn to the Pirates.

Pedro Martinez (37) - Pedro intends to showcase himself in the World Baseball Classic.  The Pirates were involved at one point.

And a guy I would like to see the Pirates become interested in...

Chuck James (27) - James, only 27, was non-tendered by the Braves in December.  He had rotator cuff and labrum surgery in September, so he won't be ready until the second half.

More from MLB Trade Rumors:

One assistant GM doesn't think the WBC will be a good gauge for Pedro Martinez's abilities, since he'll be doing short stints.

Maholm, Hinske and Beam. Oh My!

Maholm:

Maholm signed his 3 year deal, with a 4th year club option, totaling $14.5M in guaranteed money.  The breakout is as follows:

$3.5M 2009 ($1.5M of which is a signing bonus)

$4.5M 2010

$5.75M 2011

$9.75M 2012 club option, escalators could raise the option to 11.05M

A buyout for the option of  $750K.

If the option is exercised, the minimum value of the contact is $23.5M.

BTW Take:

This is another good move by the front office to lock up their perceived core of talent.  Some may point to the fact the Pirates will be losing players after 2011 in addition to having a high turnover each year after that.

Looking at other teams and sports, this is the way of life in professional sports.  One merely needs to compare the rosters of the Boston Red Sox between their two championship years to see more than half the roster changed between championships.

The key is to have players ready to step in or be willing to spend on free agents to fill the holes left behind.

This concept isn’t exclusive to only baseball.  The Steelers have 20 players returning from their Super Bowl XL roster to play this year in Super Bowl XLIII.  That is more than half of the XL team gone in three seasons.

The key is to replace those players and continue to improve.  With baseball, they have the farm system to fall back on.  Building a good pipeline will help this team remain competitive if they can get to that level to begin with.

Hinske:

Hinske signed a deal worth $1.5M with another $1M in bonuses based on plate appearances.  T.J. Beam was designated for assignment.  If Beam clears waivers, he will be assigned to Indianapolis.

BTW Take:

Beam will likely be claimed off waivers.  Hinske will be adding depth in the event one of the many young players on the team are injured (Moss) or struggle (Andy LaRoche and Nyger Morgan) or traded (Adam LaRoche).

Free Agents Conclusion

This isn’t the conclusion I was hoping to write, but it looks like the Pirates are close to signing someone.  To recap, Huntington is looking for a versatile right handed bat.  I guess that makes the next sentences all the more wrong.

The Pirates are in contract discussions with left handed hitting Eric Hinske.  Hinske is a corner outfielder/infielder.

The Pirates have also been in touch with Juan Gonzalez.  Gonzalez is limited to outfield duty and likely would be better suited to play in the AL this season, for no other reason than his age of 41.

Meanwhile another left handed bat has changed his outlook on free agency.

Bobby Abreu has lowered his asking price to 3 years and $30M.  Abreu, 34, is a 20+ HR guy who can play any position in the outfield.  He is also a player who will have trade value at the deadline.  If the Pirates were willing to go a little over budget, they could have a player to flip for prospects at the deadline.  This type of signing would show the fans ownership is willing to fork out some cash and can bring back more prospects later in the season.

Dejan Kovacevic tallied the Pirates payroll to be near $47.9M if the Pirates win both arbitration cases.  If they lose both cases, the total would be 50.1M.  This would allow the Pirates $4.9M-$7.1M to spend on free agency if they hard capped at $55M.  A deal for Abreu might be had at 3 years $24M with incentives to reach $10M a season.  The market is prime for a market the size of Pittsburgh to add talent on the cheap.  Considering what is being paid to Adam LaRoche, this deal would be a bargain.  After the season and LaRoche is off the books, Abreu would eat up what is freed by LaRoche.

If nothing else, it would appease fans that are begging for a real free agent signing while proving ownership isn’t in this for the pocket lining.

Signing the next free agent would also appease fans and fit the description of what is being looked for.

Doug Mientkiewicz is still not mentioned, even though he has proved his versatility to the team.  Oh, by the way, he bats right handed.

Some other names to watch for, in some instances again:

Juan Uribe, 28 – Right handed hitting infielder.  He could fill in the shoes Jack Wilson will leave behind if traded.

Ty Wiggington, 30 – Right handed hitter who can play LF, RF, 1B, 2B, 3B.

Brad Wilkerson, 31 – Left handed hitting OF, 1B.  Injuries are always a concern for him.  Has not played in over 140 games since 2005.

One other free agent that will likely be rumored but would not sign with Pittsburgh is Tony Garciaparra.  Also known as Nomar.  If you live in Boston, it is Nomah.

I maintain the best fit for what the Pirates are looking for is Doug Mientkiewicz.  I don’t understand what is going on with the front office when they proclaim they are looking for a versatile, right handed bat to come off the bench and have a player who wants to return that fits the mold to a tee.  Someone please explain.

From the pitching side, Pedro Martinez has been mentioned.  Look for a John Garland rumor to start in the next few days.

Rumors on LaRoche, Free Agent Signing, Cuthbert, Boras Fingered and More

A couple rumors from XM MLB Radio (XM 175)

LaRoche:

According to MLB Radio: A rumored trade persists from the West Coast pertaining to an Adam LaRoche to the Giants deal.  Apparently San Francisco is willing to trade Jonathan Sanchez and first baseman Travis Ishikawa for the much scrutinized Pittsburgh Pirate first baseman.

BTW Take:

Sanchez is quite intriguing, but for my money Ishikawa is much more tantalizing to the baseball palette.  If this is an accurate rumor, being a rumor lends to the likelihood being minimal at best, this is a deal Huntington would likely jump at.  Considering the front office denied emphatically any deal was in the works with San Francisco, I highly doubt the is much meat behind the story.  Huntington does not like to divulge anything on deals he is working on, so the denial could still be a cover-up of actual talks.  That is the only reason I have spent any time on this.

Free Agent:

According to MLB Radio: The Pirates are in discussions with free agent outfielder Luis Gonzalez.

BTW Take:

Mientkiewicz is a better fit for the team.  I do not see where a 41 year old outfielder should garner more than a minor league contract.  Gonzalez is outside the "rebuilding" project free agents the Pirates have signed recently like Monroe.  I am not sure I buy this rumor either, but Dejan's comments about a free agent signing coming soon and a name we all know makes me a little nervous this is more than a rumor.

Cuthbert:

Apparently the Pirates are favored to sign a Nicaraguan Prospect League player by the name of Cheslor Cuthbert.  According to the blog post, he will be available to sign come July and is drawing attention from many teams.

Another link from Cardinals Best News has some information on him:

Here is a link to a Google translation of an article about his tryout:

BTW Take:

I know nothing about this player but found it interesting nonetheless.  It looks like the legacy of Roberto Clemente is still paying dividends for the Pirates.  According to the articles, the kid can flat rake.  Big power, especially at a young age.

Mayor Retires:

Sean Casey has retired to take on a studio job.

BTW Take:

There are a ton of free agents retiring after seeing what the market has in store for them.  Good luck in the new gig Sean.

Boras Fingered:

Scott Boras and his agency have been fingered by Kirk Radomski as being part of the Kevin Brown portion of the Mitchell Report.

From ESPN.com:

Radomski's account says he sent HGH to Brown in the winter of 2003, and several days later discovered a wet overnight shipping package containing $8,000 in cash in the bushes by his house. Radomski says the FedEx account number and return address on the package were from the sports agency of Brown's California-based representative, Scott Boras.

Boras, reached by ESPN.com, says his agency had no connection to the alleged payment.

"The Federal Express package or anything like that, Kevin Brown was asked about it and denied it," Boras says. "The fact of the matter is we obviously give out our Federal Express numbers to a wide number of sources -- team officials, people, clients, that kind of thing -- because we obviously are sending out and mailing back and forth."

Radomski says government agents found FedEx labels from Brown in the raid of his Long Island home, but he was uncertain whether they were in possession of this particular label.

There is much more in the story.

BTW Take:

How sweet would it be to have Boras lose his license over this deal?

Delay:

One more days delay on wrapping up the free agency posts.  Once again work has got in the way of blogging.

Free Agents - Part 3

Now for my third installment of a Free Agent breakdown.

In this section, I will look at the likely 25 man roster and where there are opening that could be filled via free agents.  In the first two parts of this breakdown, I have eliminated many names from the remaining free agent list whittling it down to 43 players.

Lets start with examining the 25 players who will head north out of spring training.  It is almost a guarantee that the Pirates head north with 12 pitchers.

Here are the mortal locks to head north:

Outfield:

Nate McLouth

Brandon Moss

Infield:

Adam LaRoche

Freddie Sanchez

Jack Wilson

Andy LaRoche

Ryan Doumit

Starting Pitchers:

Paul Maholm

Relievers:

Matt Capps

John Grabow

That is 10 of the 25 tied up, 3 of 12 pitchers and 7 of 13 position players.

Here are the near locks to head into the season and reasoning why:

Starting Pitchers

Ian Snell (R) - Being the ace heading into 2008, a nice contract extension and all the tools to be a top of the rotation pitcher will outweigh a poor 2008.

Zach Duke (L) - Is like a cat, he seems to have 9 lives.  He will make the rotation unless he completely collapses in spring to the point two other pitchers outshine him.  Duke has the best chance of losing his spot in the rotation.

Tom Gorzelanny (L) - Coming to mini-camp in great shape only helps solidify him in the rotation.  He made a huge impression on the front office with his conditioning, almost to the point of being a mortal lock.

Relievers

Donald Veal (L) - Being a rule 5 pickup he has to be retained.  If the Pirates are going to give up him, it won't be until they have no other moves they can make and need a roster spot.  Veal was a top prospect in recent years, the Pirates like the talent and hope to corral the wildness.

Tyler Yates (R) - Yates has the inside track to being the right handed setup man for Capps, mostly due to the lack of other options.

Sean Burnett (L) - Burnett will start the year in middle relief and likely slide into the lefty setup role if/when Grabow is dealt.

Evan Meek (R) - It seems Meek has the attention of the coaches and the front office.  He is a Huntington move and that won't hurt him.

Position

Ramon Vasquez, inf - With a two year contract and good versatility, he might as well be a lock.

Nyger Morgan, of - He will head to Pittsburgh as nothing more than a space filler until McCutchen is ready.

We are now up to 19 of the 25, 10 of 12 pitchers and 9 of 13 position players.

First, lets look at the pitchers.  There is one starter and one bullpen spot open.  It is too early to name the fifth starter, especially considering the number of pitchers vying for the role.

The bullpen spot is much the same, a ton of arms, likely to be filled by the best option not in the starting rotation.  The bullpen, as listed, shapes up as 4 right handed and 3 left handed pitchers.  That totals out the 12 pitchers for the Pirates in 2009.  My guess for the spots are Karstens starting and Ohlendorf coming out of the pen.

Pedro Martinez is rumored, and a good possibility.  He doesn't have many interested teams outside of Pittsburgh.  It seems the Mets are looking elsewhere.  It looks like Pedro will have a choice, Pittsburgh at a reduced price or retirement.  I'm betting he waits until after the season starts to see who might have injuries in their rotation that he could slide into the spot.

As for position players, there are 3 catchers vying for the backup spot in Jaramillo, Diaz and Lerud.  This position should work itself out during camp.  My bet goes on Jaramillo.

This leaves three spots for position players.

Steve Pearce (of, 1b) - He will come off the bench as a backup at first and has the ability to play right.  The outfield can be juggled in the event of injury to any of the three slated to start the season in the outfield.  McLouth, Morgan and Moss all capable of playing left.  Morgan and McLouth can both cover center.  The spare outfielder needs to be able to play right.  Any injury or trade would likely have Andrew McCutchen on a flight to join the team immediately.  Jose Tabata may not be far behind .

Luis Cruz ( 2b, ss ) - An additional middle infielder will be needed.  With Pearce already backing up 1b and Vasquez capable to play all the positions, Cruz makes the most sense.  Bixler needs more time in AAA and needs to have some time playing 2b before the Pirates can consider him a utility infielder.  This is the season Bixler needs to prove he is ready for another shot at the majors.  When he has his chance, he must shine.  Cruz beats out Bixler because of his positional versatility.

??? ( of, inf) - The Pirates need to fill the last spot with someone capable of playing corner infield or corner outfield spots.  Preferably someone who can do all the above.  Sound like anyone who has ties to Pittsburgh already?  Paging Doug M.

Right now the Pirates realistically have one bullpen spot and one rotation spot they could fill via free agency.  They also have one opening for a utility type bench player.

Tomorrow, I will finish this up with a list of players that could fit the pitching opening and positional opening.  I will also name people I think could lose their spot on the 40 man if a free agent is signed or someone like Salazar or Daniel McCutchen force their way onto the 25 man/40 man roster.

Free Agents - Part 2

The more I thought about this set of posts, I realized this is far more than a two part series.  What I am going to do in this the second part of the Free Agent dissection.

The first logical thing to look at is who, of the 108 free agents ( I realized after the post that Jeff Salazar was already signed by the Pirates) can automatically be eliminated.

The first group we are cutting are the class A and B free agents.  The Pirates plan to build through the draft and build a strong minor league system.  Signing a type A or B free agent costs the team draft choices, unless they are signed after the June entry draft (if I understand that rule correctly).  Here is the list of players eliminated on this fact alone, the count is 31 reducing the free agent list to 77.

Player Age Status Old Team Rank
Manny Ramirez, LF 36 Free Agent (A) LA Dodgers 3
Adam Dunn, LF 29 Free Agent (A) Arizona 7
Oliver Perez, SP 27 Free Agent (A) NY Mets 10
Orlando Hudson, 2B 31 Free Agent (A) Arizona 12
Bobby Abreu, RF 34 Free Agent (A) NY Yankees 14
Juan Cruz, RP 30 Free Agent (A) Arizona 16
Orlando Cabrera, SS 34 Free Agent (A) Chicago Sox 21
Ben Sheets, SP 30 Free Agent (A) Milwaukee 23
Andy Pettitte, SP 36 Free Agent (A) NY Yankees 26
Jason Varitek, C 36 Free Agent (A) Boston 49
Russ Springer, RP 40 Free Agent (A) St. Louis 68
Randy Wolf, SP 32 Free Agent (B) Houston 24
Jon Garland, SP 29 Free Agent (B) LA Angels 36
Ken Griffey Jr., RF 39 Free Agent (B) Chicago Sox 37
Paul Byrd, SP 38 Free Agent (B) Boston 38
Braden Looper, SP 34 Free Agent (B) St. Louis 43
Ivan Rodriguez, C 37 Free Agent (B) NY Yankees 46
Garret Anderson, LF 36 Free Agent (B) LA Angels 55
Frank Thomas, DH 40 Free Agent (B) Oakland 57
Eric Gagne, RP 33 Free Agent (B) Milwaukee 61
Dennys Reyes, RP 31 Free Agent (B) Minnesota 62
Brian Shouse, RP 40 Free Agent (B) Milwaukee 65
Juan Uribe, 3B 29 Free Agent (B) Chicago Sox 70
Joe Beimel, RP 31 Free Agent (B) LA Dodgers 72
Mark Grudzielanek, 2B 38 Free Agent (B) Kansas City 88
Moises Alou, LF 42 Free Agent (B) NY Mets 97
Luis Ayala, RP 31 Free Agent (B) NY Mets 98
Jason Isringhausen, RP 36 Free Agent (B) St. Louis NR
Jeff Kent, 2B 40 Free Agent (B) LA Dodgers NR
Luis Gonzalez, LF 41 Free Agent (B) Florida NR
Paul Lo Duca, C 36 Free Agent (B) Florida NR

Of the remaining 77, 2 more can quickly be removed.  Those are players listed as DHs.  While these are players better known for bats, the Pirates can not have players on their bench that would be a liability in the field.  Cross off the following:

Cliff Floyd  DH 36 Tampa Bay 78
Jonny Gomes  DH 28 Tampa Bay NR

Some may find crossing off Gomes because he is listed as a DH is crazy.  I don't think so, he is listed as a DH for a reason.

We are now down to 75.

The next group I am cutting are outfielders and catchers.  The Pirates are very deep in outfield options.  With McCutchen and Tabata on the horizon.  All three outfield spots set with Moss slated for right, Morgan in left and McLouth as a fixture in the OF.  There aren't enough positions to go around.  The Pirates have Pearce, Monroe and Salazar in the mix for the bench outfield spots.

There are a ton of catchers coming to spring training, an experienced backup to Doumit would be ideal, but the Pirates seem to believe they can find an option in the group they have coming to Bradenton.  You can also look to the fact nearly every catcher on the list is of an older variety.  Outside of Javier Valentin, not one of them are under 36.  Squatting for a career does not lend to long careers.

Neither outfield nor catcher need to be addressed at this point.  This knocks another 14 players off the list dropping the Pirates options to 61.

Gregg Zaun  C 37 Toronto 39
Adam Melhuse  C 36 Colorado NR
Brad Ausmus  C 39 Houston NR
Gary Bennett  C 36 LA Dodgers NR
Henry Blanco  C 37 Chicago Cubs NR
Javier Valentin  C 33 Cincinnati NR
Paul Bako  C 36 Cincinnati NR
Sal Fasano  C 37 Cleveland NR
Jim Edmonds  CF 38 Chicago Cubs 32
Emil Brown  LF 34 Oakland 85
Jacque Jones  LF 33 Florida 100
Jay Payton  LF 36 Baltimore NR
Eric Hinske  RF 31 Tampa Bay 54
Brad Wilkerson  RF 31 Toronto 87

One last cut I am making, I am dropping the following players over the age of 36, not every player over 36 just the ones outside the ESPN/BA top 100 free agent list.  The Pirates won't take a chance on these older players unless it is a minor league deal.  Most of these players would not accept such a deal.  Here is the list of 18 I am dropping from the list:

Keith Foulke  RP 36 Oakland NR
Ramon Martinez  2B 36 NY Mets NR
Brendan Donnelly  RP 37 Cleveland NR
Kevin Millar  1B 37 Baltimore NR
Rich Aurilia  1B 37 San Francisco NR
Eddie Guardado  RP 38 Minnesota NR
Elmer Dessens  SP 38 Atlanta NR
Jon Lieber  RP 38 Chicago Cubs NR

Kent Mercker  RP 40 Cincinnati NR
Rudy Seanez  RP 40 Philadelphia NR
Tom Gordon  RP 41 Philadelphia NR
