Maholm and Hinske Agree to Terms

Maholm has agreed to a 3 year deal with a 4th year team option.

Hinske is a one year $1.5M deal.

BTW Take:
Coming soon.

Soon:

I am not sure where a left handed bat fits in a predominately left handed outfield.  This may point to the Pirates, justifiably, not having enough faith in Morgan to handle a full time job in the outfield.  While Morgan takes some of the poorest routes to the ball I have ever seen, he does have the speed to make up for his bad reads on the ball.  Hinske does not have that speed, nor does he make decisively better routes to the ball.  Hinske has to be considered a fallback at 1B, 3B and an occasional outfield start.  The only reason I can see Hinske being valuable is IF Adam LaRoche is soon to be traded.  Hinske has very little value in the outfield outside of a powerful bat against right handed starters.

Paul Maholm, I love the long term deal with a possible option for his first free agent year.  Although financial terms have yet to be announced, I have a feeling it will be a deal that is good for both parties.  Until I see the final numbers I am withholding final judgment until the terms are officially announced.
