Dead Horse, Part 2

Back to Brian Lawrence....
The Rocky Mountain News is reporting the following:

The Rockies are not optimistic about signing pitcher Brian Lawrence, whom they've offered a major league contract.

He missed the 2006 season after shoulder surgery in late February to repair both a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff. The Rockies would be cautious with Lawrence and have him begin the season in extended spring training in Tucson.

Normally I do not quote text. This one is easy to miss due to a very odd placement in the article.

The Denver Post is reporting the Pirates have made a better offer than Colorado.

BTW Take:
It seems every team involved is doubting signing this guy. Is he that good, or is the agent playing all the teams against each other with no luck? Worst case, Fogg will be available via trade if Colorado lands him.

New Horse on the Block...
Ben Broussard agreed with terms with the Mariners, 1 year $3.55M. Why is this of interest? Rotoworld is speculating he will be traded. He is 30 year old Left-Handed bat. He plays 1B and has moderate power for a 1B. He is a free agent in 2009, arbitration eligible until then.

BTW Take:
He loosely fits the mold DL is looking to fill. Slightly older than the rest of the team, left handed with some power and plays 1B. I think he could be had for cheap, but you never know with Seattle.

Bingo and bingo.

Like you said at HW, I would assume the Bucs would bring in Lawrence so that they'd have the depth necessary to move a SP. Oddly enough, a bunch of injured arms do make one good one, I think.

I think the Bucs might get Broussard, but I don't want them to. Like you said, he "fits the mold"--but I'd rather give Doumit the 1B at bats than Broussard.

Too much too speculate over this time of year--we're so far from Opening Day that a number of variables could throw off the entire "plan" DL is executing. I'd rather get the first piece in place and work from there.

If there is a first piece.
