MIA - Just like the offense.

I was forced into taking a day off from the blogosphere for personal reasons...Much like the offense in the 8-1 loss to the Reds Saturday. That game was putrid. Mental errors returned and bats disappeared. Lets hope for better Sunday.

Post-Game Notes

10 Down, 71 to Go!

The Pittsburgh Pirates sweep the Houston Astros in a nail biting, bases loaded extravaganza that ended with a 5-3 Pirates victory.

Jonah Bayliss saves the day, or at least gets out of a miserable jam in the 6th. A lead off single followed by back to back walks by Armas had the Pirates backs to the wall trailing 1-0.

Jim Tracy called on Jonah Bayliss who got Brad Ausmus to pop out to Freddy Sanchez for the first out. Then got a ground ball to short stop Jack Wilson for an inning ending double play off the bat of Wandy Rodriguez allowing no runs to score.

Bayliss went two innings allowing one hit a walk and no runs to earn the win.

In the bottom of the 6th the Pirates immediately loaded the bases with one out on A Castillo single, a Duffy walk and Sanchez reaching on an error by third baseman Mike Lamb bringing Jason Bay to the plate. Bay responded with a 2 run single to right scoring Castillo and Duffy giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 8th, the Pirates once again loaded the bases. Chris Duffy led off with a walk followed by a Jack Wilson single. Freddy Sanchez laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd.

After an intentional walk to Jason Bay, Xavier Nady pinch hit for Matt Capps. Nady earned an RBI by taking one for the team getting hit by a pitch on an 0-2 fastball. Adam LaRoche hit a monstrous foul ball that went swimming in the Allegheny prior to striking out. The AAA red hot Ryan Doumit followed with a 2 out 2 RBI single to right to make the score 5-1 Pirates.

Salomon Torres came in to close out the game and promptly loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly by Carlos Lee cut the Pirates lead to 5-2 prompting another pitching change. John Grabow came in to close out the game. After a allowing a run scoring single to Mike Lamb making the score 5-3 Pirates. Grabow walked Morgan Ensberg to load the bases again and give every Pirates fan another ulcer.

Adam Everett came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded with Pittsburgh clinging to a 5-3 lead. Grabow earned a save by getting Everett to ground into a fielders choice to third baseman Jose Castillo ending the game, confirming the sweep and raising the Jolly Roger!

The win brings the Pirates back to .500 on the season at 10-10. Jason Bay was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and Ryan Doumit was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Cota to 15 Day DL and Ryan Doumit Recalled

Humberto Cota was placed by the Pittsburgh Pirates on the 15 day DL with a left shoulder strain - eligible on 5/8. Ryan Doumit was recalled from AAA Indy.

Post-Game Notes

9 Down 72 to Go!

How can a 1 for 5 night actually improve a batting average and turn a players season around? When the one hit is a slump buster single that wins the game with two outs in the 16th.

Houston walked Jason Bay with two outs to load the bases in order to face the season long slumping Adam LaRoche who was 0 for 4 on the night going into the at bat. LaRoche promptly singled in Jack Wilson from third for the winning run in a game that should never have made it to extra innings.

LaRoche had 2 RBI in the game and drew a walk. He has now reached base in 14 of the 18 games he has played. Another good sign is the lack of strikeouts on the day for LaRoche. Pirate fans and teammates can only hope that single was truly a slump buster and LaRoche is coming out of his mega funk.

Possibly more encouraging was LaRoche's first RBI, a sacrifice fly to center driving in Jose Bautista in the 4th. Albers was attacking LaRoche down in the zone. With a two strike count, LaRoche was able to get a ball deep enough to score Bautista. A good throw could have had Bautista, but the throw was a lofty throw that took a bounce allowing Bautista to slide in before a tag. LaRoche's situational hitting was a key in getting the run home as well as agressive base running by Bautista.

Zach Duke had a very good outing going 7 innings allowing 1 earned run, 6 hits and 1 walk with a strikeout. Duke deserved a better fate than a no decision. This start was a far cry from his last two disastrous outings.

Salomon Torres had a freakish 9th inning where he allowed infield singles and the tying runs to score. Jim Tracy made the call for John Grabow to escape the inning after Torres could only muster a single out.

Jose Bautista extended his hitting streak to 12 games going 2 for 7 batting in the 3 hole.

Brad Eldred hit a home run to left center, yes left center, off Matt Albers in the 5th.

This game could be the one we look back on and say LaRoche turned it around in that 16th inning. We could just as easily wonder if that is the highlight of his season if he doesn't break out of his funk.

This is the type of game the Pirates needed to win. To allow a game to nearly slip away and then still find a way to win.

Anyone who attended Tuesdays sprint of a game, got their moneys worth with this marathon.

Post-Game Notes

8 Down 73 To Go!

Where else can you start following the 3-0 Pirates victory over the Astros than with Paul Maholm? A complete game 99 pitch shutout gem by Maholm. He struck out 4 and allowed 3 hits. He faced 28 batters in the game, 1 over the minimum.

All night the Astros looked outclassed when it came to facing Maholm. Not until the forth inning did they hit a fly ball into the outfield. Just a masterful pitching performance.

Many will talk of Paul Maholm finally turning the corner. Don't count your chickens yet. He may have his blinker on, but he isn't to the turn yet. If this is a taste of what can be expected the rest of the year, the Pirates may have the best 1-2-3 pitchers in the National League. The scary thing for the league, the 1-2-3 does not include the opening day started Zach Duke.

Although the Pirates scored only 3 runs, there were three players who stood out with their bats. Jason Bay gets the top nod driving in 2 runs. After a 3 for 4 day, Jason Bay is now hitting .290.

Both runs that scored on Bay's hits were in the person of the red hot Jack Wilson. Wilson had 2 doubles raising his average to .311 having hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games. During that span he has 5 doubles and 10 runs scored.

Ronny Paulino hit his first home run of the season to straight away center field as part of a 2 for 3 day that raised his average above the Mendoza line.

Jose Bautista extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He has now reached base safely in 17 of 18 games this season.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

On off days throughout the season I will take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly wearing Pirates uniforms.

The Good:
The team has three regular starters batting above .290.

A corner outfielder leads the team in RBI.

A corner infielder is leading the team in batting average.

Prior to spring training you would assume the previous statements would be describing Freddy Sanchez, Jason Bay and Adam LaRoche.

In actuality 17 games into the season the previous statements describe Jose Bautista, Xavier Nady, Chris Duffy and Jack Wilson.

Bautista lead the team in AVG. Nady leads the team in RBI. Both Duffy and Wilson are batting over .290.

The good from this is players other than the "stars" are performing at levels that complimentary players perform at on winning teams.

The Bad:
Freddy Sanchez is still struggling to find his form after missing most of spring training with a knee injury. His struggles seem to be affecting his play in the field as he is not as "steady" as we have come to expect from Freddy.

Jason Bay has started off slow. He is still performing at a decent level, but not at the All-Star level we fans are accustomed to. Part of his struggles is the lack of an offensive threat behind him in the lineup.

The Ugly:
That lack of offensive firepower is being led by Adam LaRoche. His startling .105 AVG and excruciatingly high strikeout rate have allowed pitchers to nibble more when Bay is at bat. Until LaRoche regains his form of 2006, Bay will continue to struggle.

The other lack of offense behind Bay is Ronnie Paulino. After dominating the spring and showing some of the power expected from him, he has started the season batting .182 with a .211 OBP, actually lower than Adam LaRoche.

My fear is Ronny will only be affective batting in the 8 spot in the order similar to last season. The 8 hole hitter usually sees better pitches or draws more walks due to the pitcher being on deck. The opposing team always wants a pitcher to lead off an inning if at all possible or prefer to face the pitcher if runners are in scoring position.

You Must Be This Tall

Was the recently finished 7 game road trip as bad as it seemed? No, not really. Could it have been better? Most definitely.

The roller coaster ride is definitely going at full speed.

Would you have accepted it if someone promised a 3-4 record prior to a road trip that included visits to the Cardinal, Brewers and Dodgers? Most certainly I would.

The first big hill, and knee buckling climb happened in St.Louis. A two game sweep had even the biggest doubters looking to see where the top of the hill was.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Didn't see that hidden drop off in Milwaukee. A two game sweep that included a real dud of a game by Zack Duke.

BARF!!!!

Oh the pain of the decent as the train came to Los Angeles for the super dud by Armas.

Suddenly we reached the bottom when Ian Snell took the mound. Oh the climb was sure to start again. For most of the game, the climb was brief before the drop snuck up again with a game ending Grand Slam.

The climb has started again following a gem by Gorzelanny. Every fan feared a hidden drop throughout the game. Surely a sign of a great coaster is keeping the ride unexpected.

The only thing that kept the Pirates from having a winning road trip was a last inning Grand Slam.

Right now the Pirates sit at 7-6 on the road. That is a good mark regardless of what team you are talking about. They have played 13 of 17 games on the road, not an easy task with any team or any payroll.

Yes there has been some bad baseball played, but the Pirates are not the only impersonators of The Bad News Bears. Los Angeles made as many mistakes as the Pirates did, they just capitalized on them more often. The Pirates need to learn that trick.

Many of we fans have been frustrated by the games that should have been won. This is a drastic departure from years past where even the fans expected to lose. We, even the most negative fan, are now expecting wins. Maybe the mindsets of the team and the fans are changing. Maybe Tracy is changing the mindset after all.

Hopefully this upcoming home stand will result in a few more wins than losses. The MO of this team is similar to the ride you would expect from a roller coaster. Plenty of ups, followed by plenty of downs. Hopefully the train doesn't jump the track in the process.

Post-Game Notes

The Bullpen did a nice job keeping the Brewers off the board.

The Offense made a late rally to make the game look close.

The Pirates still lost 7-5, but not without a fight.

Zach Duke dug a whole too deep for the Pirates to recover. Duke allowed 7 runs on 11 hits in 4 innings pitched. Not exactly the rebound game the Pirates were hoping for. Dukes ERA now sits at 9.00 for the season after his second poor outing in a row.

Xavier Nady once again supplied the offense going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Nady Hit his third home run of the season. Nady has shown his worth early in the season offensively.

Jose Bautista went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Chris Duffy rounded out the offensive leaders going 2 for 5.

Freddy Sanchez had a very rough day striking out 4 times in 5 at bats. He may still be in spring training mode due to his knee injury early in the Grapefruit League Season.

Jeff Suppan got the win for the Brewers and Francisco Cordero earned a save in a game where there should not have been an opportunity.

Post-Game Notes

Well.

The key number in the Pirates 7-3 loss to the Brewers is 14. Striking out 14 times and leaving 14 runners on base is an embarrassment. Add in 3 Brewers errors and you have an atrocity.

The Pirates continue to strike out in key situations when putting the ball in play can score a run. this seems to be an alarming trend in the 2007 season. A lack of fundamentals would be a poor choice of describing the issue. Trying to be too fundamental may be the cause.

What? Too fundamental? The 2007 Pirates?

Rather than focusing on making contact, the Pirates seemed to constantly try to hit the ball behind runners, trying to put balls to the right side when they were handcuffed. Maybe I just imagined this, but that was my take on many of the foul balls that led to two strike counts.

It seemed no one on the team could handle a breaking pitch either.

Add Wasdin to the mix and a close game that could still be won becomes a four run deficit.

It still may be April, but games like this are the ones that cost a team late in the season.

Maholm couldn't keep the Pirates in the game after closing the gap to 3-2.

One of the few bright spots was Jason Bay, who was the entire Pirates offense it seemed. He went 3 for 3 hitting his 100th career home run. By hitting his 100th, he became only the 6th Canadian born player to accomplish the feet.

Chris Duffy was the only other Pirate to contribute with a 2 for 4 day scoring a run and driving in another.

For the Brewers, Bill Hall is going to be an excellent center fielder when he fully adjusts to the position. Hall definitely can cover some ground in center with his speed.

Radio Edit:
Bob Ueker is just an awesome character. I really enjoyed listening to him on XM. The guy has some of the best stories in the league.

I can't count how many time he said of Jason Bay, "This kid can hit". He also proclaimed Jack Wilson as one of the best short stops in the league, that comment made me think of the "Just a bit outside" comment from Major League.

He absolutely believes the Pirates got the better end of the LaRoche-Gonalez trade saying he would take a slick fielding power hitting lefty over a reliever any day, no matter how much he likes Gonzo. He praised LaRoche for his back handed grab in the first.

I wish this was a three game series so I could listen to Bob some more.

Unfortunately for Bob, the urban dictionary defines a Bob Ueker as when someone takes a dump on top of the toilet tank.
