Pirates Sign Another Cuban Pitcher

The Post-Gazette is reporting the Pirates have signed Cuban defector Serguey Linares to a minor-league contract with an invite to Spring Training. He is a hard throwing 23 year old right hander with control problems.

UPDATE:
The Trib is reporting Linares is a reliever that clocks in at 98MPH.

BTW Take:
IF he can overcome the control issues this could be a good thing. Not that he is overly special, if he is that is a bonus, but because the Pirates are actually making a noise in Latin America and Cuba. These smaller signings could lead to better talent that has escaped the franchise in recent years. It is nice to see the Pirates actually signing some players that are not part of the amateur draft.

These smaller signings and unexpected moves are actually getting me a little more excited as Spring Training grows closer.
