Outfielder Xavier Nady, hospitalized earlier in the week, is being tested for Chron's Disease. Both the Post Gazette and Tribune-Review are reporting on Nady being tested for this chronic disease.
According to Nady's mother, one of his cousins has recently been diagnosed with the disease.
Chron's Disease is a currently incurable chronic disease affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The disease can be treated allowing the person affected to lead a normal day to day life when the disease is in remission. Periods of flareup are common even in properly medicated people who also follow a strict diet.
The disease has a low mortality rate, treatments "include steroid medications, immunomodulators (such as azathioprine and methotrexate), and newer biological medications, such as infliximab."
The most common disease misdiagnosed as Chron's is ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease.
The cause of the disease is unknown.
