According to Newsday and comments at Rotoworld, Tony Armas Jr. is close to signing with a team. The article in Newsday says the Mets "are going to miss out on free agent Tony Armas Jr., who, according to agent Fernando Cuza, is close to signing with another club."
According to Rotoworld and Ben Maller (foxsports.com), the Pirates are the only other team linked to Armas Jr recently.
BTW Take:
I'd expect an announcement, along with Sanchez, during PirateFest. This could be interesting considering the recent rumors on Weaver, it may squash those rumors. If both are signed, are we looking at another trade, including a starting pitcher, before spring training?

Say you sign Tony Armas and Jeff Weaver. What do you ask in return for Maholm and Castillo? Who takes them? Or do you move them separately?
Play a little fantasy GM.
Not necessarily a move I would make, but a deal I could see DL trying to swing:
Move Castillo or Maholm to the Cubs for Jacque Jones.
Personally, I do not make that move, BUT it has DL written all over it.
A move I might make is Castillo and Maholm for Chad Tracy and ???. This allows Tracy to play 3B, Sanchez moves to 2B. Bautista continues to play super sub. The make or break is the ???. Both Castillo and Maholm for Tracy is too much.
I might look for insurance for Duffy in CF to be ???.
Another option is Maholm for Church. I am not as high on Church as most are, but it is a move I could see happening.
What move do you make?
I'd try to get younger, I think. Attempt to get a little more AAA talent that could produce in the next year or so. You're probably not going to be able to drastically upgrade your lineup this late in the offseason, but you might be able to convince someone to add on complementary pieces like Castillo and Maholm in exchange for a chunk of the future.
Names I'd look at: Kory Casto, Chris Duncan, Todd Linden, Fred Lewis. None is a spring chicken, but they have more upside than Castillo.
Might be a moot point now that it's rumored that Weaver's going to sign with the M's. I don't think an Armas signing is enough to move Maholm right now. In July, maybe, but not now.
I'd look at the Brewers, too, after reading Jeff Sackmann's latest at Brew Crew Ball. Castillo could be a nice 2B/3B to provide depth should Koskie not be able to go, and Maholm would be a nice 5th/6th starter. Might be able to pry away a couple of AA/AAA guys for them?
Another team I would look at is the Tigers. They are rumored to want to deal Thames, but also some of their young pitchers to land a left handed reliever. A package deal could bolster our depth at starters for future trades. The pitchers I have heard named are Jason Grilli, Jordan Tata, Zach Miner and Chad Durbin.
