2006 Fun With Stats and Oddities.

Lets take a look back at how effective the Pirates were with players in different positions in the lineup and in the field in 2006.

We all know the Pirates were 67-95. There is not much fun looking at that, what I find interesting is how the team played and where they played when the team actually played well. I decided to see what the win/loss records were by position in the field and the batting order.

Looking at positions, the best starters by win/loss are listed below:
* The best first basemen were Xavier Nady (13-12) and Ryan Doumit (14-13).
* The best second basemen were Bautista (2-0) and Hernandez (1-0).
* The best third baseman was Bautista (15-16), with Freddy as the starter 42-50.
* The best shortstop was Sanchez (12-15).
* The best left fielder was Bay at 66-91, the only other player to start in left was Bautista (1-4).
* The best center fielder was Duffy (34-41).
* The Pirates were 38-45 when Jeremy Burnitz did not start, 29-50 when he did start. The best right fielders were Bautista (10-7) and McLouth (9-5).
* The best catcher was Paulino (53-64).

In the batting order the best starters by win/loss were as follow:
1. McLouth (20-23)
2. Bautista (7-7) and McLouth (5-5)
3. Sanchez 47-50 and Nady (1-0)
4. Burnitz (6-6)
5. Nady (17-12) and Casey (8-4)
6. Bautista (8-4)
7. Paulino (16-9) and Nady (1-0)
8. Castillo (22-21) and Bautista (6-6)

Some other oddities:
* When Bautista started anywhere but CF the Pirates were 28-27. They were 17-29 when he started in CF.
* Four Pirates were ejected Tracy(2), Sanchez, Torres, Doumit.
* Marte worked 1.0 innings or less in 66 of his 75 appearances.
* The bullpen was 23-25.
* Sanchez has batted .343 in his last 192 games, .001 lower than his season average.
* The only innings the Pirates outscore their opponents were the 4th (86-75) and 9th (50-33).
* 15 of Doumits 31 hits were for extra bases also reached base in 21 of his last 22 starts.
* Ian Snell was 7-4 on the road and 7-7 at home.
* Zach Duke was 9-4 at home, 1-11 on the road.
* The Pirates only winning month was July (13-12).
* Half of the Pirates games were decided by 2 runs or less (38-43).
* The Pirates were 46-44 when the starters went 6+ innings.
* 45-18 when outhitting the opponent.
* 50-34 when scoring more than 4 runs.
* 64-20 when leading or tied after 6 innings.

Now wasn't that fun?

Interesting post. I don't think I'd seen the Duke splits before. I never realized he was so miserable away from PNC Park.

You shouldn't have mentioned Jose K. as an undefeated 2B, though--you'll give DL ideas.

I hope that isn't the stat DL would focus on, but it is his step son Jose.

I was surprised by a lot of what I found. I didn't realize Doumit had reached base in 21 of 22 to end the season.

The three I found most interesting were the records at the the end of the post. It kind of shows they need to hit more, score 4 and lead after 6 to win more.

Just call me Captain Obvious!
